New Deal Cafe Show this Sunday - January 17, 2012

Hi there!  Just a reminder about the New Deal show this coming Sunday, January 22nd from 5 - 8 PM.  As promised, I have a fantastic opening act - drum roll, please...

...and her name is Erin Umstead, up and coming singer/songwriter.  Once you hear her lovely voice and mature songwriting, I know you'll be a fan just like I am.  She just released her first EP "Norway" which you can check out at her website:  http://erinumstead.bandcamp.com/.  I'm so excited to have her open the show!

Details on the calendar page.  Hope to see you there!  :-)

happy new year & upcoming show - January 2, 2012

Hey there!  Happy New Year!

Well, the semester break is upon us, and as promised, I have a show lined up at the New Deal Cafe in Greenbelt for Sunday, January 22nd AND a new song uploaded to the website. Another one of the snow songs, "Supposed To Fly,"  has been professionally recorded and produced (Thank you, Blake Althen and Human Factor Productions) and uploaded for your listening and downloading pleasure (check the music page).

And about the show!  By now the New Deal Cafe needs no introduction - you know about the wonderful listening environment and fantastic Lebanese food.  In addition, I have a surprise guest artist who will be performing a set of their own original music.  But I can't give that all away in one news entry - you'll have to stay tuned!

NEW DATE/TIME FOR NEW DEAL CAFE SHOW! - August 28, 2011

Yep, the kind folks at the New Deal Cafe have offered to have me in there next SUNDAY, SEPT. 4th from 1:30 to 4:00 PM.  Same great venue, just a week later and a little earlier in the day!  :-)  One thing I should mention - this is the same weekend as the Greenbelt Labor Day Festival, so leave yourself and extra 30 minutes or so to park and walk a little further than usual.  I'm so excited that this show will go on - hope to see you there!  :-) -Mo

AUG 28TH SHOW CANCELLED - August 27, 2011

ATTENTION:  TONIGHT'S SHOW AT THE NEW DEAL CAFE HAS BEEN CANCELLED DUE TO HURRICANE IRENE.

However, I'm in communication with the club right now as we work out a new date, probably for next weekend.  Please continue to check back for updates - and stay safe out there!  :-)

upcoming show in Greenbelt! - August 3, 2011

Hey there!  Just a reminder about my upcoming live performance at the New Deal Cafe in Greenbelt, MD on Sunday, August 28th from 5 to 8 PM. No cover, smoke-free, tips encouraged.  If you've never been to the NDC, come hungry because they serve amazing Lebanese food in addition to wine and beer.

The New Deal Cafe is one of the only local venues that specifically books independent original music acts, so please help me make this show as successful as possible for me and especially for them!  Details available here.  Even if you can't make it, you can help me promote - the downloadable flier below can be shared and put up on your own pages to help spread the word.  (If linking is an option, my website www.sweetmorrigan.com will be just fine  :-)  And encourage people to sample the free mp3's here on my website!

Morrigan at the New Deal Cafe 8.28.11!

gee, has it really been two months since I posted something? - June 30, 2011

Man, do I suck at this web presence thing or what?  Multi-tasking is definitely not my strong point.  BUT, as you may have heard, I have booked another gig, which definitely merits a post, since I haven't done any gigs since, like, January or something.  PLUS, it's at my favoritest venue in the whole wide world, The New Deal Cafe in Greenbelt.  Want to know more?  Go here.

In other news, I was stung by a paper wasp this afternoon.  I'd never seen one before.  I thought it was a firefly.  Oops.

new song! and more... - April 27, 2011

Yes, the rumors are true, I *did* hit the studio over Spring Break to record yet another of the [in]famous snow songs from last winter.  (At this rate, I should have all of them recorded by about 2013 or so... )  Many thanks to Human Factor Production's Blake Althen, award-winning international producer, for bringing his unparalleled special sauce to "It's So Easy," now available for download on the music page.

And for interested parties in the Northern Virginia area, THIS SATURDAY NIGHT (how's that for short notice?  :-)  I will be playing the March of Dimes Charity Open Mic at Caffe Amouri in Vienna, VA.  It runs from 7 to 10 PM, and although I don't have much control over such things, I will be aiming to play between 8 and 9 PM.  Also, since I've been gone so long, I promise to take a request for at least one of the songs in my (albeit brief) set.  10% of the proceeds go to charity, and I think you get some free swag for donating.  Here's the address:

Caffe Amouri
107 Church St. NE
Vienna, VA 22180

Hope to see you soon - and enjoy the new tune!  :-)  -M

cancellation :-( - March 9, 2011

Hey folks - so sorry to have to do this, but as sick as I've been, and with the schoolwork piling up, I've had to bow out of the New Deal Cafe show scheduled for the weekend after next.  However, I am still going into the studio to do some recording at the end of the month, and will have another new tune for ya soon.  Also, once classes are finished for the semester, I expect to pick up a summer gig here and there.  Thanks so much for all the support and well wishes as I make my way through my second higher education.  I'll see you soon!  :-)  -M

baby it's cold outside - January 27, 2011

It's snowing and school is cancelled, so here I am!  The snow is so much prettier when you only have a few inches to shovel. ;-) And for a bit of news - I'm currently booking some shows for the Spring while school's on break, so check back often in the next couple of weeks for updates.  Just added - March 20th at the New Deal Cafe - details on the calendar page.  See you soon!

happy new year - January 2, 2011

On this anniversary of the passing of my dear Aunt Ellen, I've added the newly recorded "Helen Goodnight," written in her honor, to the music page, available both for streaming and download.  Also, all of the songs, including that one, now have lyrics up, too.  May the new year bring more happiness and less sadness than the last!

more shows! - November 9, 2010

Yes, the rumors are true, I'm back out playing gigs again!  I'll be at Jilly's in Pikesville and back at the Bench in Ellicott City in December.  Check out the calendar page for all the details!

Thank you! And one more chance... - September 19, 2010

Yes, yes, I know I said the New Deal show was the last one.  And before I forget, a big, huge thank you to all of the wonderful folks who came out for that last show!  It's not a show without you.  :-)

I do, however, have one last appearance in 2010 - my yearly trip to the Second Chance Wildlife Center in Gaithersburg, MD.  This place is like an animal rehab center for all the non-domesticated furries (and feathereds) in our area, from raccoons to squirrels to birds to lizards.  They rely exclusively on donor funds, so I always make a point to do a show for them at their Annual Open House.

This year's is Saturday, October 16th, from 12 to 4 PM.  There will be raffles, a cake walk, a chance to tour the facility and meet the critters up close, and of course, live music!  More details on the shows page.  This is an all-ages, outdoor event.  I hope you can make it!  :-)

last chance - July 29, 2010

Hey there!  Well, school starts in less than a month, so these upcoming August shows will be your LAST CHANCE to catch a live Mo show until 2011.  Yep, that's right, this is it - it's now or never.  As such, I have one each of the different show flavors; one bar show and one listening show.  Wednesday, August 4th I'll be at the Judge's Bench Pub from 9 PM till 12:30, and then Sunday, August 29th (note the new date!) I'll be at the New Deal Cafe from 5 to 8 PM.  Can't wait!

Just added some final Summer dates! - June 17, 2010

In case you hadn't heard, I'm going back to school in the Fall to start a pre-veterinary program so I can become a veterinarian and continue my career of taking care of all of those furries!  So I've made sure to squeeze in a couple of extra shows at the end of the Summer, because once school starts, they'll be few and far between.  Look for bar gigs at the Judge's Bench and special sit-down, listening shows at the New Deal Cafe.  More info on the calendar page

Summer Judge's Bench Show! - June 3, 2010

TONIGHT - 9 PM till Midnite-ish, I'll be live at the Judge's Bench Pub in Ellicott City.  Great micro-brew selection, friendly staff and a wonderful neighborhood pub vibe.  Details on the calendar page.  See you there!

Run for the Fuzzies! - May 12, 2010

Yep, I have finally found a way to unite my favorite workout pastime to my love for them little furballs:

I have signed up to run the Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary 5K Run For The Animals coming up on May 23rd, a week from Sunday.  I have a pretty modest fundraising goal - just $300 - but I need your help to get there!

Follow this link to my donation webpage
(or cut and paste the website below into your browser) to make a secure online donation.  It only takes a few seconds, and even the smallest donation will be much appreciated!

For posterity, here is a link to the Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary website, and here's a link to the PSAC 5K Run info.

Thanks in advance for your donation and support!  :-)

summer shows - May 5, 2010

Check out the calendar page for gigs coming up next month at my favorite clubs - The Judge's Bench in Ellicott City and The New Deal Cafe in Greenbelt - on June 3rd and 20th respectively.  Both are No Cover, Smoke Free gigs.  Hope to see you there!

THANK YOU! - April 5, 2010

THANK YOU to everyone who came out to make the CD Release Party such a great success!  Despite the fact that my voice tried to leave the party early, your support kept me going long past the point of reason, never mind good sense.  BUT, we made it!  :-)  And the recovery has already commenced - I'll be back in full force come June, I promise.  Woohoo!

CD RELEASE CONCERT SAT. 4/3/10 - March 26, 2010

Yes, it's finally here!  Saturday, April 3rd, from 8 to 11 PM, there will be an evening of virtually unadulterated Mo music at the New Deal Cafe in Greenbelt, Maryland. The new CD will be on sale for 1/2 price (wear or purchase a Mo t-shirt that night and get your copy FREE!), and there will be, for the first time this millenium, copies of my 1998 demo Learner's Permit on sale as well. (Apparently, despite attempts to destroy all copies through an ill-conceived skeet shoot, my parents kept a few boxes. If you do decide to buy it, though, don't say I didn't warn you.)

Music-wise, it will be just me and my guitar, playing mostly originals, all night long, yes indeedy, your eyes do not deceive you - I can fill as much time as I want with original music. Which will be pretty much the whole night with a few favorite covers thrown in to mix things up here and there. Yay!

The New Deal Cafe is a fantastic listener's venue that serves awesome Lebanese food as well as beer and wine. There's no cover (tips are encouraged), and it is an all ages, smoke-free establishment.

Details, for posterity:

See you there!

Honeyed Out - February 10, 2010

First off - thanks to the hardcore Greenbelters who braved the snow to come and enjoy a great night of music at the New Deal Cafe this past Sunday.  In response to the calls for a recording of my version of Honeyed Out written by Kris Delmhorst, I have this link on YouTube to Dave Nenner's recording of one of my open mic performances in Ellicott City.  The recording picks up in the middle of "No More" (one of mine) and "Honeyed Out" starts at about 1:35.  Enjoy!

SNOWMAGGEDON - February 7, 2010

The gig is ON!  The New Deal Cafe IS open!  See you at 5 PM!

LAST JUDGE'S BENCH SHOW TONIGHT! - January 21, 2010

Yes, the rumors are true. As I have been putting more time and energy into my veterinary career, the amount left over for gigs that run to the wee hours is dwindling. As such, the gig tonight, Thursday, January 21st will be my last Bench show until the summer. So come on down and help me end this run with a bang! The Judge's Bench is a fantastic neighborhood pub in Ellicott City with a marvelous microbrew selection (and none too shabby in the scotch department, as well).  This is a favorite venue of mine, and there seems no fitter place to park my bar gigs until later in the season.  I'll be playing from 9 PM to 1 AM and the kitchen stays open late. More details to be found on the calendar page. And mark your calendars for the CD Release Party at the New Deal Cafe in Greenbelt, slated for Saturday April 3rd.

Benefit Shows this Fall! - October 16, 2009

The leaves are turning and the weather's gone all topsy-turvy, so it must be Fall here in DC! And that means benefit shows for all kinds of furry critters, from wild to domestic. Check out Mo's upcoming open house shows at these special locat shelters: The Second Chance Wildlife Center (Sat., Oct. 17 in Gaithersburg) and the Washington Animal Rescue League (Sun., Nov. 1st). These are both family-friendly all ages events - hope to see you there!

And the hits keep coming... - August 26, 2009

Hey there!  What a great summer it's been - I've been all over the DC area, meeting and playing for lots of new folks, and I've met some awesome people.  It's only going to get better this Fall, with lots more acoustic shows.  The calendar is filling up quickly and I can't wait to see all my new friends again.

I'm also now in regular rotation on Jango.com, the best internet radio station on the web.  You can choose your own artists (like Morrigan), and it designs the playlist according to what you like, including making suggestions based on your preferences, which you can approve or not.  The more you use it, the better it learns your tastes.

Hey there!  I am so excited to announce the upcoming Morrigan & The Strays show at the Light Horse Pub in Alexandria:  SUPER 80'S NITE!  Yes, break out your stirrup pants and jellies because the 80's are back on July 9th, 2009 at the Horse.   We'll be mixing 80's tunes in with your favorite Mo-riginals, and there will also be music from the as-yet-unreleased NEW album, coming out this Fall.  21+, No Cover, Smoking Permitted (back bar only).  See you there!
